Thierry HOYAU
Artist Craftman
« Don't think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it's good or bad, whether they love it or hate it.
While they are deciding, make even more art. »
- Andy Warhol, carnets
Biography
- it's hard to talk about yourself.
Born in Paris on Christmas Day, 1962, I am a « young artist ».
After 25 years in the field of media (Internet, Video…), the need to do other things and the desire to explore new horizons steered me towards artistic endeavors. This change of career, as well as a move to a new land, provided a fresh outlook on life. Our travels have influenced us and have led to our move to Quebec.
While creating our emigration file and during the months of waiting for our permanent residence status, my motivation to pursue my artistic interests was enhanced.
Finally, I arrived in September, 2012 with family and luggage in hand, and we rediscovered Montreal and settled into our new life.
Artist statement
Always independent, self taught and adept, the thirst for knowledge and the desire to understand the world around me, has made me a passionate person.
As a result of working with various materials, the challenges and probably the need to master my work, I have pursued working with metal. I love the mix of endless angles, cutting, soldering, pumicing-rubbing down materials, the delicate nature of the oxidization process, and the vigour with which materials defend themselves. Are you familiar with the odour of metal? Of leather? The light of an arc? The sparking of a grinder?
In fact, things become simple: the subject of my pieces is always in steel and the supports vary from one piece to another.
